Spirit of Math's Community Involvement
Building Communities Together
As global leaders in education and innovation, we at Spirit of Math Schools are dedicated to helping our local communities thrive!
Through our campuses located throughout Canada, the United States and Pakistan, we are always looking for ways to contribute to a wide range of initiatives for the betterment of our global community.
Here’s a look at just a few ways Spirit of Math gets involved:
Turkey Giveaway with Freeman Real Estate
Spirit of Math is proud to have partnered with Freeman Real Estate to give away 500 turkeys to those in need during the holiday season. For decades, historic Toronto retailer Honest Ed’s had been giving away turkeys, but with the store closing its doors in 2016, Spirit of Math’s Central Toronto Campus and Freeman Real Estate saw this as the perfect opportunity to carry on this amazing tradition! Despite frigid temperatures, our team, Freeman Real Estate, and a group of Toronto City Counsellors, kept the tradition alive as they handed out turkeys on Dec. 8, 2017 at the site of the old Honest Ed’s store at 581 Bloor Street West in Toronto.
2017 Holiday Coat Drive with New Circles Community Services
Spirit of Math Riverdale Campus Director, Supreet Randhawa, and Teachers Mark Bang and Andrea Atherley, were proud to organize a Holiday Coat Drive for New Circles Community Services, a Toronto-based non-profit agency that builds strong and caring communities by providing basic necessities for those living in poverty. New Circles’ GLOW (Gently Loved Outfits to Wear) clothing bank provides more than 12,000 newcomers to Canada annually with clothing for Toronto’s unpredictable weather. Because of the efforts of SoM Riverdale Campus, our students, and parents, Spirit of Math proudly received a Certificate of Appreciation.
Feed the Genius Food Drive
Students at the Spirit of Math Schools Willowdale – Incarnation campus participated in the Feed the Genius Food Drive, which gave them a chance to help Toronto families in need during the Thanksgiving season. For each parcel of non-perishable food donated, students received a raffle ticket to win a Spirit of Math prize pack! The winners were Nathan Lin (Grade 2), James Wei (Grade 2) and Annanya Kainthla (Grade 7).
19th Grand Dushara Festival - Edison, New Jersey
Dushahra is a major Hindu festival celebrated globally every year. Spirit of Math was on hand at the 19th Grand Dushara Festival in Edison, New Jersey, where we challenged parents and children with math questions, enjoyed fireworks, and other traditional Dushara festivities.
Chinese Family Day 2017
Spirit of Math Schools was thrilled to celebrate Chinese Family Day 2017 at Mel Lastman Square in Toronto on June 10th, 2017! Chinese Family Day is an annual event attended by more than 20,000 people including dignitaries from around the world, Canadian politicians, performing artists, families, festival sponsors, and more!
The Gwendolyn Ledger Memorial Fund
This fund provides a scholarship for post-secondary education to one individual each year, assisting them in becoming employable. In 2017, Spirit of Math provided a donation to the fund, which is held in trust by the Cummer Avenue United Church Board of Trustees. Since 2009, the fund has assisted 15 individuals.
The Withrow Silent Auction
Withrow Avenue Public School is situated in Toronto’s Riverdale neighborhood. Withrow is a dual-track school, offering both an English and Early French Immersion program to approximately 600 students. The building also houses the Withrow Childcare Centre as well as Quest Alternative Senior School. Withrow is also a focal point for the community and is used by community groups outside school hours.
Every year, the Withrow Home and School Association holds a silent auction to raise funds for a number of initiatives for the betterment of education in the community. Recently, Spirit of Math provided a donation to the silent auction, held on April 7, 2017.
Aga Khan World Partnership Walk
Every year, Spirit of Math partners with the World Partnership Walk in support of the Aga Khan Foundation Canada (AKFC). In 2016, under the leadership of team captain Qaahir Rahemtulla from the Spirit of Math Thornhill campus, our team raised more than $11,375 for the AKFC, an organization dedicated to social, economic, and cultural development in 30 countries across the globe.
Our campaign was recognized by the Canadian Government, who matched our fundraising efforts, resulting in a $22,750 contribution to the cause.
On May 28 in Toronto, Spirit of Math will again be on hand at the World Partnership Walk at David Pecaut Square.
About the Aga Khan Foundation
Established in 1980, AKFC is a registered Canadian charity and an agency of the worldwide Aga Khan Development Network, a group of development agencies with individual mandates that address social, economic and cultural dimensions of development.
