MICHAEL SHIN
Grade 11

Michael was born and raised in North York. During his early schooling, he was extremely fortunate to be part of the remarkably inspired community of math students being taught by Mr. Charles Ledger at Zion Heights J.H.S. (in what would eventually become the Spirit of Math program).

At that time, there was a real feeling of excitement about being able to learn math in a way that was engaging, fun and challenging. There was a sincere enthusiasm for learning, a spirit of inquiry, and a tremendous source of pride that unified the students and school because of the math program.

This unique atmosphere of learning was a huge asset for Michael, improving his confidence in being able to think logically and creatively, work in groups, and achieve academic success. These skills carried through to university, where Michael obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Biology from the University of Toronto, and a Medical Degree (M.D.) from McMaster University.

Indebted in gratitude to the Spirit of Math program for its positive influence on his life, Michael feels privileged to have the opportunity to once again participate in the unique atmosphere of learning at Spirit of Math, this time teaching and sharing the principles and spirit of learning math that have made such a difference in his life.

To keep it all in balance, Michael enjoys practising and teaching yoga, spending time with his niece and nephew, and just taking life one day at a time.
